Fossano stands on a high river terrace in the province of Cuneo, overlooking the valley of the Stura di Demonte. The old town occupies the top of the bluff. From above, its compact rectangle of streets is clearly separated from the river below by a steep, wooded escarpment, a natural edge that shapes the entire map.
At the centre stands the Castello dei Principi d'Acaja, a fourteenth-century castle with four corner towers and a moat, built for the Acaja branch of the House of Savoy. The main streets around it are lined with arcades, the covered walkways typical of Piedmontese towns. The regular street plan still reflects the medieval layout.
A Fossano map poster brings together the castle's square footprint, the arcaded axis of the old town, the railway junction on the plain and the curve of the river valley. Newer districts spread across flat farmland. There, long roads and field boundaries lead towards Cuneo, Savigliano and the Alps beyond.
