Frankfurt (Oder) sits on the Oder River in eastern Brandenburg, directly on the border between Germany and Poland. From above, the river forms the city's eastern edge. The centre lies close to the water, residential districts spread west over gently rising ground, and a road bridge leads across to Słubice, which was part of the same town until 1945.
The city is the birthplace of the writer Heinrich von Kleist, and its large Gothic brick church of St. Mary, known for its medieval stained glass, is one of the main landmarks. The European University Viadrina, refounded in 1991, draws students from both sides of the border and gives the city a clear cross-border identity.
