Fresno lies in the north of Tolima, on the eastern side of Colombia's Central Cordillera. The town is built on uneven mountain ground, and from above its streets form a compact grid that bends and shortens wherever the slope becomes too steep, so the outline is more irregular than on a lowland plain.
Around the town the terrain drops and rises in folds of hillside, crossed by winding rural roads that follow the contours rather than straight lines. This is coffee-growing country, and the farms and small settlements scattered across the slopes shape the pattern of tracks leading in and out of town.
A Fresno map poster keeps the focus on the town's close cluster of blocks, set against the long curves of the mountain roads. In black and white, the difference between the tight centre and the loose lines around it gives the map a sense of height even on a flat page.
