Friern Barnet is a suburb in the London Borough of Barnet, in north London. From above, it is a patchwork of residential streets, mostly Victorian and interwar terraces and semi-detached houses, broken up by parks, playing fields and the long curve of the North Circular Road along its southern side.
The area's best-known building is the former Colney Hatch asylum, later Friern Hospital, a vast Victorian institution that closed in the 1990s and was converted into housing. Its long, symmetrical footprint is still easy to spot on the map. Friary Park, with its open lawns and trees, offers a large green space near the old village centre.
