Fuengirola stretches along the coast west of Málaga, a narrow band of streets between the Mediterranean and the hills of the Sierra de Mijas. A seafront promenade runs for several kilometres beside the beaches, and behind it apartment blocks and streets fill almost the entire flat coastal strip of the small municipality.
At the southern end, where the Fuengirola River reaches the sea, stands Sohail Castle, a fortress of Moorish origin on a small hill above the mouth. A Fuengirola map poster shows the contrast between the straight coastline and the dense, tightly packed town behind it, with the river cutting across on a diagonal.
The town grew from a fishing village into one of the main resorts of the Costa del Sol and has a large community of residents from northern Europe. The marina, the railway line to Málaga and the motorway on the higher ground behind complete the picture.
