Gangākher lies in Parbhani district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, on the banks of the Godavari, one of India's longest rivers. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets near the river. Roads lead out across a flat to gently rolling landscape of fields that stretches away on every side.
The Godavari is considered sacred across Maharashtra, and towns on its banks have long turned toward the river for worship as well as for water and trade. On the map, the river anchors the composition. It is a wide, curving band, and against it the tight centre and the looser outer streets are easy to read.
