Gaoliu is in northern Jiangsu, on the wide, flat plain that stretches across this part of eastern China. From above, the landscape is shaped by agriculture and water management. There are rectangular fields, straight roads and drainage channels, with compact villages scattered at regular intervals across the land.
The town itself is a denser cluster of streets within this pattern. It serves as a local centre for the surrounding countryside and is linked by road to the larger cities of the region. Much of northern Jiangsu is lowland farmland shaped by generations of canal and ditch digging, and Gaoliu belongs to that tradition.
