Garches lies in Hauts-de-Seine, on the wooded heights west of Paris. On a map it looks like a green-fringed pocket. Curving residential streets climb the slopes, and a railway line cuts through the middle. The large forested park of Saint-Cloud presses in on the eastern side.
The town is known for the Raymond-Poincaré hospital, a major teaching hospital. It is also home to Le Corbusier's Villa Stein-de Monzie, one of the architect's key houses of the 1920s. Much of the town consists of detached houses and gardens, which gives the map a fine, irregular texture.
A Garches map poster captures that texture well. The irregular lanes, the straight cut of the railway and the dense mass of the neighbouring woods make an intimate composition, quite different from the rigid geometry of central Paris a few kilometres away.
