Gatumba lies in Bujumbura Rural province, west of Burundi's largest city, on the flat plain near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. It is a border town: the frontier with the Democratic Republic of the Congo runs close by, and the main road west from Bujumbura passes through on its way to the crossing toward Uvira.
The map shows a town shaped by low, wet ground. The Rusizi River and its channels meander toward the lake, and the land between them is flat and marshy in places. The town's streets form a loose, irregular pattern along the main road, with housing and small plots spreading out on both sides into the plain.
A Gatumba map poster captures a landscape of water and borders: the winding river delta, the broad lake edge to the south and the straight road that ties the town to Bujumbura and the Congo beyond. In monochrome, the river channels become fine curving lines that give the composition its movement and character.
