Geel lies in the Kempen region of Antwerp Province, Belgium. Its map is typical of a Flemish town that grew outward from a central market square: roads radiate in several directions toward outlying hamlets, and ribbons of houses follow them, leaving fields and woodland between the spokes.
Geel is internationally known for its long tradition of family foster care, in which people with mental illness have lived with local households for centuries. The practice is linked to the town's veneration of Saint Dymphna, whose church stands in Geel. To the south, the Albert Canal passes with large industrial zones along its banks.
