Gonābād lies in Razavi Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran, on a dry plain at the foot of mountains. On a map the town has a clear, compact form, with main avenues crossing a dense grid of residential streets and gardens and farmland around the edges.
The town is known for the Qasabeh qanat, one of the oldest and deepest underground water channels in Iran, and part of the Persian Qanat World Heritage listing. For centuries it has carried water from the mountains to the fields. The region is also known for its saffron.
