Gonesse lies in the Val-d'Oise, about 15 kilometres north of central Paris, on the flat plain of the Pays de France. The old town centre gathers around its Gothic church in a knot of narrow streets, and later housing estates and business zones spread out around it. To the south and east, open fields still separate Gonesse from the airports of Le Bourget and Charles de Gaulle.
For centuries Gonesse was known for its bread, the pain de Gonesse, supplied to the markets of Paris. In 1783 the first hydrogen balloon, launched by Jacques Charles in Paris, came down in its fields, where alarmed villagers attacked it. Today motorways and rail lines frame the town, and its map reads as a study of the edges of a great city.
