Gorjī-ye Soflá lies in Razavi Khorasan, very close to the edge of Mashhad, on the broad plain of north-eastern Iran. The name marks it as the lower of two related settlements, soflá being the Persian word for lower. Places like this once stood on their own in farmland and now sit in the path of a fast-growing city.
The map shows both layers at once. The older core has an irregular pattern of lanes and compact blocks, typical of a village that grew over time. Around it, newer streets are laid out in straighter, more regular lines as urban development moves outward across the plain.
