Grand Prairie stretches over an unusually long distance between Dallas and Fort Worth. From above, it is a narrow city that runs for miles from north to south. At its northern edge is the wooded floodplain of the Trinity River's West Fork. In the middle, major freeways cross from east to west. At its southern end is the wide open water of Joe Pool Lake.
The city spreads across parts of three counties, and its layout reflects this long, straggling growth. There are post-war suburban grids near the old centre, industrial and aviation land along the freeways, and newer curving subdivisions further south around the lake. Lone Star Park, a horse racing track, is in the north, and the city also borders the entertainment district around Arlington.
A Grand Prairie map poster has an unusual shape: a tall column of streets with freeway interchanges at the centre, parkland and a river at the top, and a large lake at the base.
