Grangwav, known in French as Grand-Goâve, lies on the northern coast of Haiti's southern peninsula, facing the Gulf of Gonâve west of Port-au-Prince. The town occupies a narrow strip of flat land between the sea and steep green hills, and from above it reads as a band of streets running parallel to the shore, crossed by lanes climbing inland.
The main coastal road linking Port-au-Prince to the south passes through the town, tying it to Léogâne to the east and Petit-Goâve to the west. Grand-Goâve was badly damaged in the 2010 earthquake, whose epicentre lay not far away, and recovery from that disaster has shaped the town in the years since.

The streets fill the space between in a loose, irregular pattern, and the sea provides wide, calm negative space. It is a spare, honest portrait of a Haitian coastal town.
