Gravatá lies in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, roughly 80 kilometres west of Recife, on the highway that climbs from the coast into the interior. It sits higher than the coastal capital and has a noticeably milder climate. It has long been a weekend retreat for Recife families and is sometimes nicknamed the Switzerland of Pernambuco.
On the map, the town stretches along the main road, with a compact centre and neighbourhoods climbing the surrounding hills. Streets bend with the terrain rather than following a strict grid. On the outskirts, gated communities and country houses sit among green slopes, connected by winding lanes that loop through the landscape.
