Griesheim lies on the Upper Rhine Plain in southern Hesse, immediately west of Darmstadt. The land is almost perfectly flat, and that shows on the map: streets run long and straight, residential areas extend in orderly blocks, and fields and allotments reach out toward the Rhine. The older village core is still visible as a tighter knot of streets around the main road.
Griesheim has an important place in German aviation history. The August Euler airfield, established here in 1908, is regarded as the first airfield in Germany. The former airfield grounds are now largely open land and a nature area. On the map they show as a broad, empty space at the edge of town.
A Griesheim map poster shows the quiet geometry of a Rhine-plain town: straight roads, neat residential blocks, the open expanse of the old airfield and cultivated land beyond. Tram lines link the town to Darmstadt, and the gap between the two places is narrow.

The site of Germany's first airfield, opened in 1908, lies at the edge of town. It appears as a wide open area, now used largely as nature land.
Rhine plain fields
Flat farmland and garden plots stretch west of the town. They are divided into long, straight strips typical of the Upper Rhine Plain.
