Groß-Umstadt is in southern Hesse, where the Odenwald hills meet the Rhine-Main plain. It is the centre of a small wine-growing area sometimes called the Odenwald wine island, and vineyards cover the slopes around the town. The historic centre has a Renaissance town hall and half-timbered houses around its market square.
On a map, the old town is a tight, rounded core of short, irregular lanes. Its outline still follows the course of former fortifications. Around it, newer districts spread out in looser patterns, and main roads cross the valley. To one side the terrain rises toward the Odenwald, and the vineyard slopes and field tracks produce fine parallel lines that contrast with the dense centre.
