Guararema lies in the eastern part of São Paulo state, between Mogi das Cruzes and the Paraíba Valley. On a map the dominant feature is the Paraíba do Sul river, which bends through the municipality in wide loops. The town grows along its banks, and the streets are fitted between the water and the hills that rise on either side.
It is a small place with a calm, green character, popular with weekend visitors from greater São Paulo. The old railway station and the tourist train that runs on the historic line are part of its identity, and the countryside around it is dotted with rural properties and patches of forest. On the map, the dense centre gives way quickly to winding country roads.
