Gumdag Map Poster & Print
Gumdag is a town in Balkan Province in western Turkmenistan. Its name translates roughly as sand mountain, and on a map the setting is clear: a compact settlement set in an open, arid landscape, with few natural features beyond the contours of the desert and the low hills of the region.
The town grew in connection with oil extraction, which has been carried out in the area since the Soviet period. That history shows in the map as a planned layout of straight streets and residential blocks, with roads leading out toward the oil fields and to Balkanabat.
A Gumdag map poster is striking for its contrast between order and emptiness. The regular grid of the town stands against the pale, unmarked space of the desert, crossed here and there by tracks and pipelines. It is a stark, graphic image of a place defined by its resources and its landscape.

Desert surroundings
Wide arid land surrounds the town, leaving large areas of the map open and emphasising the compact built-up core.
Oil field roads
Tracks and roads extend from the town toward the surrounding oil fields, adding thin, purposeful lines across the desert.
