Gurdaspur is a district headquarters in northern Punjab, on the flat, fertile land between the Ravi and Beas rivers. On a map the town is compact. An older core of narrow lanes and bazaars is surrounded by newer residential blocks. Beyond them, a regular pattern of fields stretches toward the international border with Pakistan.
Canals of the Upper Bari Doab system cross the surrounding countryside and give the plain a fine network of straight lines. The railway between Amritsar and Pathankot passes through the town. The main roads lead out to other towns of the district and north toward the hills.
The district also holds a notable piece of history. At Kalanaur, within the district, the young Akbar was proclaimed emperor in 1556, and the platform where this happened is still preserved. A Gurdaspur map poster brings the town's lanes, railway and canals together in one calm composition.

The railway crosses the town in a long, straight stroke. It links Gurdaspur with Amritsar to the south and Pathankot to the north, and it anchors the whole layout.
