Gur’yevsk lies in the south-west of Kemerovo Oblast, known as Kuzbass, near the low Salair Ridge. The town grew around metalworking. It began as an early nineteenth-century smelting works, and metallurgy has remained part of its identity ever since. The town's name honours a minister of that era.
On a map the town stretches along a river valley. The industrial site takes up a large area near the centre, and residential streets fan out around it in a mix of regular blocks and older, less even lanes. Hills and forest close in at the edges, typical of the Salair foothills.
