Gyānpur is the administrative headquarters of Bhadohi district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the flat alluvial plain north of the Ganges. The land here is almost level, so the map is shaped less by terrain than by the network of roads connecting the town to villages, market centres and the river to the south.
The district is widely known for hand-knotted carpets. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area has long been one of India's main carpet-weaving regions, and the craft is spread across many small towns and villages rather than concentrated in one place. Gyānpur itself is a modest town, its streets gathered around administrative buildings and local markets.
