Győr lies halfway between Budapest and Vienna, where three rivers meet: the Mosoni-Duna, a side branch of the Danube, and the Rába and Rábca coming in from the south. The water splits the city into several parts. On a map the rivers wrap around the old centre and separate islands and districts connected by a series of bridges.
The historic core stands on a small rise called Káptalandomb, or Chapter Hill, topped by the basilica. Around it, the baroque inner town keeps a tight grid of streets and squares, much of it pedestrianised. Across the rivers, the map opens into wider residential areas, industrial zones and the large Audi plant in the city's industrial park.
Győr has been a river crossing since Roman times, when the settlement was called Arrabona. Today it is a university and industrial city with a well-kept centre. A Győr map poster traces the rivers, bridges and baroque streets that make its plan one of the most distinctive in Hungary.
