Halaç lies in Lebap Province in eastern Turkmenistan, in the valley of the Amu Darya between Türkmenabat and Kerki. From above, the landscape is organised by water. A narrow band of irrigated farmland follows the river, and canals and field boundaries create a fine geometric pattern. The town sits inside this green strip, and beyond it the land quickly turns dry.
The town has a simple, low-rise layout, with streets arranged in blocks and main roads running parallel to the valley. The surrounding area is mainly agricultural, and cotton and other crops depend on irrigation from the river. The main road and railway along the Amu Darya connect Halaç with the region's larger towns.
