Halifax Map Poster
Halifax occupies a peninsula on the western side of one of the largest natural harbours in the world. The downtown streets form a grid that slopes steeply from Citadel Hill down to the waterfront, while the narrow Northwest Arm defines the western edge. To the north the harbour narrows and then opens into the broad Bedford Basin.
Two long suspension bridges span the harbour to Dartmouth on the opposite shore, and a ferry links the two downtowns. At the southern tip of the peninsula, Point Pleasant Park forms a large wooded area laced with trails, while the Public Gardens and the Commons provide open spaces close to the centre of town.
Halifax was founded by the British in 1749 as a naval base, and the star-shaped Citadel still commands the hill above downtown. The city is the resting place of more than a hundred Titanic victims, and in 1917 the Halifax Explosion devastated its north end. The Macdonald and MacKay bridges cross the harbour to Dartmouth, drawing two long lines across the water between the peninsula and the eastern shore.
