Hami Map Poster
Hami, also known as Kumul, sits at the eastern end of Xinjiang. For travellers crossing west from the Gansu corridor, it has long been the first oasis on the road. On a map the city is a compact grid set in open desert, with straight, wide streets. Irrigated fields and tree lines form a green fringe at its edges before the land turns to bare gravel plain.
To the north, the eastern ranges of the Tian Shan rise out of the basin, and meltwater from these mountains has sustained the oasis for centuries. The railway and the main highway between inner China and Ürümqi run through the city. They draw long, straight lines across the map that show how isolated the settlement is within its surroundings.
Hami is best known for the Hami melon, a sweet variety grown across the region and sold throughout China. It was also a stop on the Silk Road and the seat of a line of local rulers, whose mausoleums survive in the city.
