Hannover sits on the Leine river in the north German plain. From above, the centre is a compact area of streets around the Old Town and the New Town Hall, with the river running along its western side. Much of the centre was rebuilt after wartime damage, so the map mixes older street lines with broad postwar roads.
South of the centre, the Maschsee is a long, artificial lake created in the 1930s, surrounded by paths and parks. To the east lies the Eilenriede, a city forest larger than New York's Central Park, which sits right next to the dense residential districts. Together they make Hannover one of the greenest large cities in Germany.
A Hannover map poster also picks up the Herrenhausen Gardens in the northwest, where the Great Garden has one of the most important baroque layouts in Europe, drawn in precise geometric lines. Further out, the Mittelland Canal crosses the north of the city, and the trade fair grounds in the south cover a large area of their own.

A large wooded area on the eastern side of the city, crossed by paths and a few roads. On the poster it forms a big open shape among the streets.

The Great Garden's formal baroque layout, with straight avenues and geometric beds, stands out clearly against the ordinary street pattern in the northwest.
