Hanwella Ihala lies in Colombo District in Sri Lanka's Western Province, east of the capital along the main road inland toward Avissawella. The Kelani River flows past the town, and from above its broad meanders are the most striking feature, curving through a green landscape of plantations, paddy fields and homesteads.
The built-up area follows the main road and spreads outward along smaller lanes, leaving plenty of green space between houses. This is a part of Sri Lanka where the flat coastal lowlands begin to give way to rolling land, and the terrain gently shapes the pattern of roads.
