Harrogate, in North Yorkshire, grew from the discovery of mineral springs into one of England's best-known spa towns. The map still reflects that history. The streets curve around greens and gardens rather than forming a rigid grid, and large Victorian terraces and crescents line the main roads. The town centre is compact, with shopping streets sloping down towards the parks.
The most striking feature from above is The Stray, around 200 acres of open grassland that wraps around the southern side of the centre. It appears on the map as a large, irregular empty shape crossed by footpaths. To the west, the Valley Gardens run in a narrow band towards the woods. The railway cuts through the centre, and Knaresborough and the River Nidd lie just to the east.
