Harsewinkel lies in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the district of Gütersloh. The landscape is almost perfectly flat: open fields, scattered farmsteads and hedgerows, crossed by the upper course of the Ems. The town itself forms a compact centre with residential areas and a large industrial zone spreading out from it.
Harsewinkel is best known as the home of Claas, one of the world's leading manufacturers of combine harvesters and agricultural machinery. The factory grounds are a prominent feature on the map. The municipality also includes Marienfeld, a village that grew up around a medieval Cistercian abbey whose church still stands.
