Heckmondwike is a town in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, set on rising ground in the Spen Valley between Dewsbury and Cleckheaton. From above, it has the close-knit pattern of an industrial Pennine town. Rows of terraced streets run across the slopes, and small open spaces break up the dense housing.
The town grew in the nineteenth century as part of the heavy woollen district, and it became known especially for blanket and carpet making. Its market place and green still form the centre, and many of the surrounding streets date from the years when the mills were running at full capacity.
