Last Chance Gulch
The historic main street follows the winding course of the gulch where gold was found in 1864, giving downtown a curving, irregular line unlike a typical Western grid.

Helena Map Poster & Print
Helena grew from a gold strike in 1864 at Last Chance Gulch, and the gulch still shapes the heart of the city. The historic main street follows the old creek bed as it winds south into the hills, which is why downtown Helena does not sit on a straight grid. Later neighbourhoods laid out more regular streets around this crooked spine.
The city became the capital of Montana, and the State Capitol and the twin spires of the Cathedral of St. Helena are among its best-known landmarks. To the southwest, Mount Helena rises directly above town as a city park crossed by trails, while to the north the land opens out into the flat, wide Helena Valley.
A Helena map poster captures this meeting of mountain and valley. The irregular downtown, the tighter grids of surrounding districts, the green mass of the park and the looser pattern spreading north all read clearly in black and white. It is a capital city with the plan of a mining town, and the map shows both.

Mount Helena
Mount Helena City Park rises right at the southwestern edge of town, a large open area on the map with trails threading across its slopes above the streets.
The Helena Valley
North of the city the terrain flattens into a broad valley, where roads and development spread out in a more open, regular pattern toward the surrounding ranges.
