Heroica Caborca lies in the northwest of Sonora, near the edge of the Altar Desert, and its map has the clarity typical of arid towns. A regular grid of streets sits on level ground, with wide roads leaving it toward the coast and the border. Around the town, irrigated fields form large green rectangles. Dry riverbeds and desert scrub fill the space between them.
The town's full name recalls April 1857, when local residents and Indigenous allies defeated the American filibuster Henry Crabb and his armed expedition. The event earned Caborca the title Heroica. The Mission of Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, a church from the early nineteenth century, still stands at the edge of the old town and is a reminder of the Jesuit and Franciscan missions of the Sonoran Desert.
A Heroica Caborca map poster captures that combination of desert, farmland and history. Large rectangular fields surround the town, separated by straight farm roads and canals. From above they create a strong, repeated pattern in the desert.
Desert washes
Dry channels and sparse desert land lie between the fields and the town. On the map they are thin, meandering lines through otherwise open space.
