Hilsa is a town in the Nalanda district of Bihar, on the wide, flat plain south of the Ganges. The land barely rises or falls, so the map is shaped by settlement and farming: a close-built centre with narrow lanes, roads leading out toward nearby towns and villages, and fields divided into small plots all around.
The town is an administrative and market centre for its part of Nalanda district, a region best known for the ancient university site of Nalanda and for Rajgir, both some distance to the south-east. Life in and around Hilsa is closely tied to farming on the fertile plain.
