Hinckley sits in south-west Leicestershire, close to the county boundary with Warwickshire. On a map the town has a clear core: a small, irregular centre of older streets around the market area, surrounded by rings of twentieth-century housing that spread outward in every direction until they meet farmland.
The town's edges are sharply drawn by roads. The A5, which follows the line of the Roman Watling Street, runs along the south-western side, while the M69 passes to the east. To the west the Ashby Canal curves through the countryside, a thin line of water that gives the map a quieter, older rhythm.
Hinckley has a long association with hosiery and knitwear, and for centuries the stocking frame shaped its economy and many of its buildings. A Hinckley map poster shows the town as it is today, the old market centre and the later estates held together by the roads and canal that frame it.
