Hochheim am Main stands on the north bank of the Main, just upstream from where it joins the Rhine, between Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. It is known above all for wine: the English word hock, long used for Rhine wines in Britain, is generally traced to Hochheim, and one local vineyard is named after Queen Victoria.
From above, the old town sits on higher ground, a compact cluster of lanes around the church, with newer residential districts spreading behind it. Toward the river, the map shifts into long, parallel strips of vineyard running down the slope, and the Main itself forms a broad, calm band along the southern edge.
