Hoffman Estates lies in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Its layout is typical of postwar American suburbs, and on paper it is striking. From above, curving streets, loops and cul-de-sacs fill the residential areas in organic, almost leaf-like patterns. Straight section-line roads divide the land into large squares around them.
The village grew from a 1950s housing development by the Hoffman family's building company, which gave it its name. Later, the Prairie Stone business park on the western side became home to the Sears headquarters and to the arena now called the Now Arena. Interstate 90 crosses the village as a firm diagonal.
Forest preserves and ponds add open shapes to the map, especially in the south and west. A Hoffman Estates map poster shows the contrast between the rigid Midwestern survey grid and the soft, winding streets built inside it.
