Hohoe lies in the Volta Region of eastern Ghana, in a valley among forested hills close to the border with Togo. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets where several main roads meet. Around it, farmland and forest spread out across uneven ground, and smaller settlements are scattered along the valley floor.
The hills are the defining feature of the surrounding landscape. Mount Afadja, often cited as Ghana's highest point, rises not far from the town, and the Wli waterfalls, among the tallest in West Africa, are in the hills to the east. Hohoe is a market and administrative centre for its district, and roads lead from it to the nearby hills, villages and the border. Streams run down from the higher ground through the valley.
