Holzwickede sits on the south-eastern edge of the Ruhr, between Dortmund and Unna, where the dense industrial region starts to give way to fields and woodland. The town is a patchwork of residential districts separated by open land. Rail lines and motorways cut clear diagonals through the area, and on a map it looks much less urban than its neighbours.
Two features give the town its character. The runway of Dortmund Airport lies along its northern border and appears on the map as a long, straight bar. And the Emscher, the river that runs through the Ruhr for decades as an industrial channel, rises here, at a spring preserved on an old farmstead. In Holzwickede it is still only a small stream.
