Homewood is a village in Cook County, south of Chicago, and from above it shows the classic Midwestern order of the region: straight streets, square blocks and long arterial roads running to the compass. The railway that crosses the village gives the grid a diagonal-free spine, with the small downtown gathered close to the station.
The rail line has shaped Homewood since its early days. Today it carries Metra Electric commuter trains toward Chicago, and the station is also served by Amtrak routes heading south. On the map, the tracks read as a firm band through the village, with residential streets branching off in careful rectangles.
