From above, Hồng Lĩnh is pressed against the base of the Hồng Lĩnh range, a ridge of forested peaks that rises sharply along its western side. The streets thin out as they climb toward the slopes, so the built-up area spreads mostly across the flatter ground below, where the grid is loose and practical rather than planned.
The main north–south highway of Vietnam runs through the town, and on a map it reads as a firm spine that most local streets branch off. East of the centre the pattern breaks into irrigation channels, field boundaries and small lanes, and the dense town gives way to the farmland of the Hà Tĩnh coastal plain.
The mountains named after the town appear often in Vietnamese poetry and local legend, and they are the reason the place has such a clear edge on paper.
