Hopa lies on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey, in Artvin province, only a short distance from the Georgian border at Sarp. From above the town is a narrow strip. Its streets fill the small area of flat land along the shore and at the mouths of the valleys, while steep, heavily vegetated slopes rise right behind it.
The coastal highway runs along the waterfront, carrying traffic toward the border, and the port adds straight quays and breakwaters to the shoreline. The hills around Hopa are covered with tea plantations, part of the tea-growing region that extends along this humid coast.
