Hørsholm lies north of Copenhagen, between forests and the Øresund coast. The map feels green and open. Winding residential roads loop around woodland, small lakes and parkland, while the town centre forms a denser knot. To the east, the municipality reaches the coast at Rungsted, where a harbour and a straight shoreline mark the edge of the land.
Hørsholm grew around Hirschholm Palace, a royal residence demolished in the early nineteenth century. Today Hørsholm Church stands on the palace island, still surrounded by water. Karen Blixen's home, Rungstedlund, is also in the municipality and is now a museum dedicated to the author of Out of Africa.
