Hoyland Nether sits south of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, on rising ground above the valleys that once fed the region's coal industry. The map shows a mix of old and new: short rows of terraced streets around the older centre, cul-de-sacs and estates built later, and green land left where pits and spoil heaps once stood.
The M1 motorway runs close by and links the town with Sheffield to the south and Leeds to the north. It has become a significant influence on how the area has changed, bringing business parks and new housing to land once shaped by mining. Fields and woodland still separate Hoyland from neighbouring villages.
