Hualqui lies in Chile's Biobío region, on the banks of the Biobío River a short way upstream from Concepción. From above, geography governs its shape. The broad river runs along one side, hills rise on the other, and the town spreads as a long, narrow strip in the space between them.
The street grid follows the valley. The main roads run parallel to the river, and shorter streets climb toward the hills until the slope stops them. Beyond the town the hills are largely covered in forest and plantations, so the built-up area is a pale band between dark ground and open water.
