Hucheng lies in hilly country in the Sichuan Basin, administratively part of Chongqing. From above, it looks nothing like a flat grid city. Streets follow contours, curve around hills and drop into valleys, while terraced fields and scattered villages cover the slopes around the town.
The area's landscape is typical of the eastern Sichuan Basin, with rounded hills, narrow valleys, small rivers and intensive farming on every usable piece of land. Towns like Hucheng serve as market and service centres for the surrounding countryside, linked by roads that wind through the terrain.
