Huilong is a town within Chongqing municipality in south-western China, in the hilly country north-east of the city's main urban area. Here the land rarely stays flat for long. Low ridges, small valleys and cultivated terraces cover most of the ground, and settlements fit themselves in wherever they can.
From above, Huilong's streets gather in a compact centre and then follow the easiest lines through the hills. Roads curve around slopes rather than cutting across them, and smaller lanes and paths spread into the surrounding farmland. In black and white the pattern looks almost like a fingerprint, dense in the middle and loosening at the edges.
