Hyosha lies in the north of North Kivu province in eastern DR Congo, just north of the equator. The surrounding country is green and hilly, with small farms, stands of forest and a dense network of paths linking one community to the next. On a map the settlement appears as a loose cluster of streets and tracks rather than a formal grid.
This part of the Congo belongs to the wider region that includes the Rwenzori Mountains and Virunga National Park, one of the most biodiverse landscapes in Africa. Life here is closely tied to farming and to trade along the main roads, and settlements have grown along ridges and routes rather than following a planned layout.
