Ibirama lies in the upper Itajaí valley in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, where the Hercílio river winds through a narrow, hilly landscape. From above, the town is shaped by the river: streets run along both banks, bridges cross it at key points, and the built-up area extends into side valleys wherever the slopes leave enough room.
The town was founded by German settlers under the name Hamônia, and that origin still shows in its architecture and traditions. On the map, the surrounding hills are dense with forest and farmland, and roads climb away from the valley floor in switchbacks and curves. The river's bends dominate the composition.
Ibirama is known for rafting on the Hercílio, whose rapids draw visitors to the region.
